Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
