PSG Edges Olympique de Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on 14 different times.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match between the French league champions and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger opened the scoring early on.

Yet, the southern French side struck twice in the closing moments to take a shock advantage. Initially, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital leveler in the final moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing penalty victory.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the past thirteen years.
