Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
